Volunteer. Habitat For Humanity Women Build 2017
Y’all! I'm going to tell you right now that if you want to do something for someone that will make you feel like a million bucks...Volunteer for Habitat For Humanity, or sponsor a Build! Help give someone the possibility of homeownership. Habitat is a global non profit organization helping people and families in need of decent and affordable housing.
I was originally drawn to Habitat because it represents so many things close to me. As a Realtor….Homeownership. As a home renovator….Construction. And the knowledge gained by volunteers on the work site that gives them the confidence to go and make their own home improvements.
Just recently my sister Lex and I were part of a special Women Build, where over 150 women volunteers came out to help build a home for Stephanie and her daughter. Stephanie had lived in Franklin her whole life but with the extremely high home values in Franklin, TN she wouldn’t have been able to purchase in this area if it weren't for Habitat For Humanity Williamson-Maury. A common misconception is that Habitat gives these homes away. Not so. The homeowner does pay an affordable interest free mortgage in addition to investing what they call "sweat equity" that is the home owner helping to not only build their own home but also help on other homes being built for people going through the same process as them!
Seeing all these women volunteers, being empowered, gaining confidence and knowledge is truly priceless. This build in particular was a Women Build, but all the others throughout the year are for any volunteers!
Lex and I hosted an event called Hammers and High Heels to raise the last half of the 70k it cost for the “Bricks and Sticks” of the home. That was an amazing night! A killer silent auction, with a reclaimed wood table made by yours truly, great food, drinks, and an awesome band with lots of dancing… Giving back never felt so good!
Are you about to renovate or remodel? One more awesome thing Habitat offers is a program called DeConstruct, it's free, tax deductible AND you get a clean start on your project, win win!!! Habitats deconstruction team will carefully remove your cabinets and other sellable items such as windows, doors, toilets, sinks, vanities, tubs, faucets, fixtures, and sell them at the Habitat ReStores.
